1964 1/2 Mustang Some
FACTS, and a little HISTORY of the 1964 1/2 Mustang Below is a
brief history to help understand how the 1964 1/2 Mustang came
about.
Ford's Mustang was conceived
in full knowledge that in the mid-'60s the biggest population
bubble in history was coming of age in America. Baby boomers would
rule the '60s and there was little reason to think they wanted
cars that were anything like their parents' cars. The 1964 1/2
production Mustang followed two Mustang concept cars. The Mustang

United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, N.Y., during October
1963, was a front-engine, four-seater foreshadowing the production
machine that went on sale six months later. On March 11th, Henry
Ford II's nephew parades a pre-production black Mustang to lunch
in downtown Detroit. Newsweek picks up the "unauthorized"
disclosure. This becomes one of several clever public relations
schemes. Magazine ads appear, hinting at a first look at the groundbreaking
Mustang: "The most exciting thing on TV tonight will be a
commercial." During the 9 p.m. time slot, 29 million Americans
watch the "unveiling. "Mustang preoccupies the public's
attention at the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows. Later, the
automotive press takes to the road in a Mustang tour from New
York to Detroit. An eager press corps assembles on the Empire
State building observation deck for a reveal of the Mustang. To
manage the feat, a Mustang is disassembled, freighted up a service
elevator, and reassembled. The production Mustang was shown to
the public for the first time inside the Ford Pavilion at the
New York World's Fair on
April 17, 1964.. It went on sale at Ford dealers that same day.
Compared to every other American car then in production, except
the Corvette, the Mustang was gorgeously sleek. The Mustang costs
roughly half as much as a Chevrolet Corvette.
On May 31, Mustang is the official Pace Car of the 48th Annual
Indianapolis 500. of the 36 Wimbledon White Mustang convertibles
